Philadelphia – Drexel's Jon Van Houten scored three goals and recorded an assist while the Dragons' defense led by senior All-America candidate Adam Crystal and goalie Bruce Bickford allowed just two goals as the Dragons defeated Saint John's, 9-2. The game marked the second straight outing that Drexel has held an opponent to just two goals as they held Binghamton to two scores just four days earlier. Drexel improved to 4-1 while the Red Storm dropped to 1-4.
St. John's opened the scoring with a goal from Trevor Michaelsen that was assisted by his twin, Tom. The Dragons replied with three straight goals as Mike Fillipone, Colin Ambler and Van Houten all scored to give Drexel a 3-1 advantage. Saint John's would score just before the half on a Graeme Gillespie goal to send the game to intermission with the Dragons holding on to a 3-2 lead.
The Dragons came out of halftime determined and put the game away with an offensive flurry. Brian Neary and Andrew Chapman each tallied within a 30-second span then Van Houten added a man-up goal. Ambler and Greg Dougherty would also tally in the period as the Dragons outscored St. John's 5-0 in the third period. Van Houten would tack on his third goal in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
The Drexel defense and midfield were stellar throughout as St. John's was successful on just seven of its 17 clear attempts while the Dragons failed just once in 18 opportunities to clear the ball. Drexel out shot the Red Storm, 43-19, and picked up 30 groundballs to St. John's 16.
Bruce Bickford made 10 saves in the cage for the Dragons as he lowered his goals against average to 5.11. Dan Goldberg made 23 saves for the Red Storm.
The Dragons host Notre Dame at Vidas Field on Tuesday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m.
